Subject: How to Adjust Lips Size?

RodS ( ) posted Wed, 25 March 2015 at 8:55 PM · edited Mon, 15 April 2024 at 4:56 AM

Not sure if I'm in the right place - if not, just point me in the right direction, and I'll be grateful.

I'm a definite noob with Blacksmith (latest version), but trying to learn as I go. I'm trying to do a character morph for M4 - so far, so good. But the character (person) I'm trying to re-create has fairly thin lips - much thinner than M4s rather full lips. I've tried several chisels with minimal results. How do you adjust the size/thickness of the lips? I haven't found anything in the tutorials that helps, so far.

Any help/ideas are appreciated!

Thanks

Personally, I like using the bulge hammer, but just a little and then tweaking with the chisels. You'll want to pay careful attention to the settings for each tool (on the right hand side), like hardness, size, etc.  The quality of the selection can be pretty important for getting the exactness of a lip ridge line just right, so it definitely takes some playing around with.  If you haven't already, you might want to use the YouTube link above (here in our forum header) to watch the video tutorials on surface selection and the facial morphing of the "Asian tough guy" video.  Though those videos used version 4 the user interface was very similar, just version 6 has more tools. But, I'm guessing that you're using B3D 6.  There are videos there for version 5 too, if you need those.

Hi, I find it helpful to select by material or element and select the lips. Then modify them to your liking. The Bulge tool works great and I hope you know that Alt-Bulge does the opposite or indent the polygons. You would want to do as Blacksmith3D noted above and limit the size and strength of the tool. UNDO is your friend in all these matters. Unwarp used with a low strength moves the mesh back to its starting position slowly and can be very handy

Also use the resurface tool often to "relax" the mesh. Under the Touchup tool, I use smooth and smudge to move the mesh for small areas like the lips. For me, I find it best to keep going back and forth with these tools to get the results I want. Once the lips are closer to your liking, you can a select the face too and use the Bulge and resurface tools to smooth and model the area between the thinned lips and the face.

Hey, thanks a bunch, Blacksmith3D and Jack238!

Yeah - my bad - forgot to mention I'm using B3D 6 pro. I've seen several of the tutorials, but I'll have to check out the one you mentioned.

I'm having a blast playing with BS3D, not that I'm any good with it as yet. I'm trying to create a a new 'bad guy' for the T.N.A. story I have running in the galleries. He's based on someone rather famous (or maybe infamous). I'll have to post something when he's a little further along!

:-D

Oh, yeah, I meant to add (like Jack mentioned) that I usually turn down the strength, size, and hardness, and I UNDO is my best-friend in B3D.  I like the smooth and touchup tools, too.

Hope this helps, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the software.

Please update us when you post your new character. We love seeing what people create with B3D!

Happy week-end to all!

OK - here's my WIP of the new 'bad guy' for my T.N.A. story.... He's still very much a WIP - I had to hand paint the hair (also very much a WIP.... LOL) as I couldn't find anything that was the style I needed.

So.... Can anyone guess who I've based him on?

Hope everyone has an awesome weekend, and a Happy Easter!

Your character morphs and painted hair look great!  Sorry, I don't recognize who you based him off of. Thanks for sharing your wip, looks like the project is coming along nicely.

Hi, I was looking at the changes/morphs from M4. Looks very good. But I did think that it had the look of a former NSA contractor/employee.

Good - I'm headed in the right direction, then! :-D

I did check out the 'Asian Tough Guy' video - lots of good stuff there - just what I needed, in fact. I'm going to have fun with this!!

FWIW, here's the final product.... Meet my new bad guy for my story: Dr. Edmund Snowzem! :-D Found the perfect hair over at DAZ.
