Subject: New Install C4D10.5 need Plugin Help

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Mon, 18 May 2015 at 5:32 PM · edited Fri, 22 March 2024 at 9:14 AM

Hi all,

Thought I'd never get back to using my C4D, but I found my discs yesterday, and I've just re-installed my C4D It's only rel 10.5 I know but I love using it, and I can't afford newer.

However it's been more than 6 months since I migrated everything over to this new (spankin'!) computer, and a heck of a lot longer since I last did an install.

C4D is working just fine, but on opening an old one of my files, I got the message: some PlugIns are missing...etc etc

So how do I find out what I should put where?

I used to have a vast slew of materials, from the goodies and my own and from feebies online, and I'm sure some of the materials will be missing from that old file (and others) too.

So where do I put it all?

Like I've already added back Riptide, and CityGen, but a couple of others in the saved plugins folder on another drive that I copied over are not showing up, and I know that some PlugIns conflicted with others, but I can't remember which.

There's ShadowCatcher, now I have a zip for that and also folder of Shadowcatcher files separately, I can install shadowcatcher inside the PlugIn folder, but where do I put the ShadowCatcher files folder?

And is there anything else I should be doing?

Glad to see you using C4D again :)

C4D 10.5 is fairly old by now so many plugins will simply be outdated by your new system, especially if you are running 64 bit as many old plugins are 32 bit only. Some plugins can be replaced by updated versions but many are gone forever. The first thing you should check is the Console window, see if you can get any hints from there (can't remember where it is in 10.5 but check the Window and Scripts or Plugins menus).

I've never actually used ShadowCatcher but check this for more info on installation: http://www.motionworks.com.au/cinema-4d-the-shadow-catcher/

Good luck!

You think you're glad!  Lol!  You should have seen my delight when I found it in a box in the Summerhouse when we cleared it out on Sunday, well nearly cleared it, we had to stop because it was getting too dark and rain was threatening.

Last time I got a new PC Ian cloned the C drive, this time it didn't work, (different format) so I had to reinstall everything from scratch.  Thus needing the C4D discs.

Thanks for the link, I really appreciate that.

The thing is I'm not seeing all the plugins that I've added in the PlugIns drop down menu.  So maybe they only work from another menu?

I have a drive with the old C drive stuff copied to it, I've just moved all the materials over.

Yes, that could be it -- some plugins work fron the Plugins menu and some work from other places (like shader plugins, for instance, you usually access them from within the shader or material, where you can add the plugin as an effect for color or luminosity).

Also, some 32 bit plugins will not work on a new 64 bit system.

Do you know which of these goes where?

I mean Atmosphere, and cellular shader for instance, and Starfield?

the atmosphere and starfield are deceptive you dont know you have got them installed unless you look on the shader drop down in the material browser i think from memory. most of these plugins do have documentation- and if you have an incomplete installation id just go to the site and download it again :-) jobs a good un

I've found Atmosphere - as you said it's in the shader drop down menu.  Starfield on the other hand is in the Texture menu under "Surfaces".

I certainly do need more info on Atmosphere... I wish I knew where to find it...

Ah, found it.  Only now, from what I see there (seems this same person did the Starfield plugin) I'm not sure if the Starfield I found in my C4D is the default one or the plugin I just loaded...!?

It seems this guy, Michael Welter, did a whole load more plugins too,  and it looks like a good proportion of the rest of that list are his plugins too... great, most of the info in one place!

I like the description of the ThingsOnSurface Shader too. (that'll be why I downloaded it the first time).

no the starfield plugin is a lot more complex. as you dive down into the shader menus you can alter star sizes colour and density etc very good little plugin. the only limit ive found is that it doesnt like to be used as an alpha and layered but im assuming it will work using fusion instead :-)
