Subject: Vanishing Texture

Hi there,

I'm trying out the Demo I downloaded from http://www.blacksmith3d.com/

When I paint or clone with an image, the texture disappears as soon as I let up on the mouse. I just bought the standard version and I'm waiting for my CC to clear, so I thought I'd plug my serial number into the demo version. It recognized the standard license, but the texture still disappears.

Am I missing a step or is this just the demo version's restrictions? Here's a screenshot of texture cloning.file_069059b7ef840f0c74a814ec9237b6ec.pn

file_3988c7f88ebcb58c6ce932b957b6f332.jpIs Is the model already uv mapped?  If so you need to make sure the maps are also brought into B3D and assigned.  You can drag and drop maps from your windows folder into B3D or go to File and use the import, but you can also right click inside the maps tab (like example image above).file_eecca5b6365d9607ee5a9d336962c534.jp

But after you import maps, they also need to be assigned under the "Manager" tab  (like shown in the second example image).

Once that is done, please make sure you that you have 'selected' the area in which you are going to paint or morph with the selection tool. There are some tutorials on our youtube channel that can help you with the selections, painting, and morphing tools. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4VgrrBdQHL_Oi5dploypSHITjDwlP8zU and, if you haven't already, please download our manual at the top of this forum to help guide too.

Oh, you should also check to make sure your demo version that you activated is 6.1.0.1.  I'm guessing that it probably is, but it depends on when you downloaded the demo.

Hope that helps and please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Yes, the UV color map and nmap have been imported and applied. I figured out a work-around - projection brush. It works even better, although the process is a bit strange - out to painter, in from painter, then paint - Page 204 of the manual explains that you must be on a top layer when painting. I was likely not. The manual reads "When working with layers, you may often apply a paint stroke, only to see it disappear, leaving you scratching your head, wondering what happened."  That's EXACTLY what I was experiencing. I discovered that by accident today. And I just discovered that it's best for me to clear all selections before painting, since what I select, I hide.

Now that I'm getting the hang of things, I've discovered that I need the pro version - not for the texture transformer, but because there is a limitation on the number of layers that can be added in the standard version. You know, I was really, really careful about evaluating the pro and standard version. The only defined difference that I could see from the documentation was texture transformer. One of those version comparison charts might be a good idea, so shoppers can decide which features are included and needed in each package. Honestly, I couldn't think of a reason I would need texture transformer, so I opted for the standard. But, I can't make due with layer limits. I need to hide objects and polys for each different material, and sometimes that means for every object.  Fortunately the upgrade process is painless. I'm using Blacksmith3D-v6.1.0.0-Win Pro version now, thanks to the handy link above. Nice, portable distributable app, BTW...unzip and go. I like that!

What would be even better is the ability to drag and drop Group objects to Display Groups groups, or just hide/show/lock by group under Groups. With that, I wouldn't have to paint-select polys to hide them.

Anyhow, thanks for getting back to me with support. Basically, the problem is a "newbie error". :-)

Thanks for letting us know, and the suggestion on the display groups. We will add it to our wish list.  We are glad you are liking our software and hope you will share some of your work produced with it sometime.

It's a great application. It does exactly what I need and quite a bit more. I'll get around to discovering those other features eventually. I've been working on a replica of the Warehouse 13 (TV series) Artifact Tracker Football prop. I needed an 8,192 pixel color map, as well as AO, bump, specular/glossy maps.  I've been using 3D Coat for years, but while it's great for UV mapping and displacement painting, it's a little unpredictable with texture resolution and output. So I bought Blacksmith 3D and finished the painting of my latest project. Here's a snap of my model and a link to the backstory...

That's a great looking texture!!  I'm glad to hear that you choose Blacksmith3D over 3d-coat for this project.   : )
