Subject: How to import a Genesis or Genesis 2 character on Blacksmith?

baccioly ( ) posted Thu, 11 June 2015 at 8:13 PM · edited Wed, 20 March 2024 at 8:54 AM

I am guessing CR2 files for Genesis and Genesis 2 characters can't be imported, as I got error messages every time I tried.

Trying to import the DUF file for the base genesis or genesis 2 characters are loading forever in may iMac i7 with 16Gb.

What file should I import to edit my Genesis and Genesis 2 characters?

Thanks,

Bruno Accioly

Hi,

I usually import the OBJ file for the character. I export it from DAZ3D Studio and import into Blacksmith3D. You have to change the character to base resolution under the parameters tab. Importing morphs back into DAZD will get a mismatch on the polygons if you don't.

I have imported DUF's into Blacksmith and they do load lots of data but I do not remember them being too slow. They were not instantaneous either.

I normally use the OBJ file because that is what I got used to. I do not load the texture maps if I am only going to be doing morphs. I am not sure about the CR2 files and Genesis or Genesis 2. I am sure others here have more info on that.

Hello Bruno,

First, please note that not ALL .duf files can be imported. The original Genesis and Gen 2 males and females can. The .duf files for the "add-on" type characters, like V6, cannot. But, I am guessing that is not your issue here (since you specified gen and gen 2).

Basically, importing a duf file without selecting morphs or textures is the same as importing an obj file. So, if that's the case for you, I'd suggest just importing the obj file (like jack mentioned above).  Right now, if you try to import a gen or gen 2 duf file without selecting either option (morphs or textures), you will get an error in the bottom left message window.  Is that are you are referring to when you say it won't import?  If so, can you please try to import the .duf file with either the import morphs or textures selected (not both)?   A duf file should import fine with either one of these options selected (just not both). If not, then you don't have the right duf file.   In order for me to get them to import, I have to use the path of C:UsersPublicPublic DocumentsMy Daz 3D LibraryPeopleGenesis 2 Male (or Female) because my other path where I like to store my content (on my D: drive) does not work.  If you select import textures, and the textures don't import, that's because the texture files didn't reside where Blacksmith3D thought they were supposed to be. In that case, you just manually import them, or you can drag and drop them from windows (not sure about Macs).

My apologies, we don't have our office Mac in the office today to check on the errors. But, I can tell you that IF you try to import both morphs and textures with a duf file, B3D will crash (at least on Windows). This is something we are looking into. It may take some time to resolve that. But hopefully, most people are working on either morphs or textures and not both at the same time. If you want both, I suggest importing the duf with the morphs, and then manually bringing in the textures.

My gen and gen 2 figures import with just textures in about 10-12 seconds and about  13-15 seconds to import with just morphs. Of course, this is Win 8 on a new, super awesome Alienware laptop with high end GeForce graphics card. Imports can take some time, especially when the mesh is heavy (high polycount) and when there are a lot of textures and/or the textures are high resolution (like many of genesis ones are). There is actually a LOT of computations going on in the background for all these things, so it can sometimes take a minute or a couple (depending on what other software and resources are being used).

If B3D has crashed, please look for the Blacksmith3D-Recovery file (usually in your documents folder) and send it to us at info@blacksmith3d.com.   There is info in there that can help us resolve issues.

Thanks!

The first is that b3d crashes whenever I try to import a .duf file with both the options are checked to import the morphs and textures.  This crash is on .duf files that I have verified will import properly when just morphs are selected OR when just textures are selected.

However, the other error that shows in the message window WITHOUT crashing b3d if I try to import the same .duf file when neither morphs or textures are selected.  The user complaining about this is on a Mac, and I’m on Windows. I don’t have the office Mac available to test on a Mac, so I’m only guessing that they are probably getting the import error for the same reasons I am.  I am contacting them to verify that though.

So, I’m guessing if someone wants to import a duf without morphs and textures, I should tell them to just import the obj…right?

And, that we are looking into the b3d crash if they try to import both.  In the meantime, they can still import either the morphs or the textures (just not both)….

If you're going to be doing morphs, you need to export from DAZ Studio and make sure your model (Under General in the Parameters tab) is set to BASE under Resolution Level and 0 under Sub Division Level. Otherwise it won't import back into DAZ.

For textures, you can leave it alone since you won't be bringing that particular model back in, only the texture maps.

As far as how I do it, I use the export function in DAZ to export the model, then I just drag and drop it into Blacksmith. The textures don't seem to work that way anymore, but I don't have any trouble with the model doing it.
