I know I should respond to this as I like having the forum to ask questions. But I don't have any answers as to how to get the forum more active. It seems like there are just not that many people using TG2/3 and the ones that do, have moved on from TG classic and don't use that at all. Too bad TG2/3 is so intimidating.
Maybe some basic lessons on the parts of TG2/3. We could all do that "lesson" and post our results and then on to the next lesson. I know that I did a tutorial by Schmeerlap a long time ago that helped me a great deal but some of it was even too complicated for a true beginner. Anyway, that is the only thought I have. :-)
(It is not just here that things are slow....other sites are also. )
Just to let you know that I do share your concerns regarding this little corner of Rendo and your post didn't go unnoticed. But I can't offer you a solution, not even a hint of one.

I'd love to see advice on how to create the perfect landscape! Maybe some pointers?
What's the latest news about Terragen?

Pajama,
Which version are you looking for first steps for v.9 or the current version v3?
I have set up a TERRAGEN Resources http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/?forum_id=12398&show_faq
Please don't hesitate to ask direct questions. There seems to be an on going issue with Forum Reply alerts (ebots) I would suggest just site mailing me so I can answer them quickly

It would be nice if the challenges go on but I see the problems Danny.
May I make a suggestion?
In the Photography forum there is also a kind of challenge.
A certain topic is given for a month and everyone can post as many images as he want (direct upload in the forum).
Maybe we can use this for Terragen also?
It has also the charm that questions or comments can be ask directly in the forum.

I like it it sounds interesting thats for sure. We can give that a go as its obvious and unfortunate that the old skool TG challenges just aren't working anymore

I think I joined this forum well after most of the drop-off had occurred, and my only really involvement has been the TGC challenges.
I only use TGC free , since I'm a cheapskate out of financial necessity. And I've only really used it to create backgrounds for Poser.
I never really made any progress with TG2 free since my poor laptop seems to be too old to cope with it.
I can't honestly see anything that will draw more people into these Terragen challenges, especially the TGC ones, except prizes. But personally I don't think that's the right way to go.
Regarding the Terragen forum more generally - the fact that there's so little activity here probably discourages people from posting their Terragen questions here. I know that I post my Poser/DAZ Studio questions in the forums frequented by the people I'd like to answer my questions.
How do you encourage those sort of people to become more active in this forum? By having lots of people asking interesting questions. Unfortunately it seems to be a vicious circle.
Are any other Terragen forums more active? If so, then ask interesting questions here on the Renderosity forum, and link to them from those other forums.
I also think Renderosity haven't done themselves any favours with last year's forum/market changes. I'm trying to do my little bit to help, and I quite often post problems in the Community Center forum - but I think that in itself speaks volumes.
But I firmly believe that a positive outlook can overcome most things... not all, just most. ;)
The 3Dcheapskate* occasionally posts sensible stuff. Usually by accident.
*also available in ShareCG, DAZ, and CGBytes flavours.
HOW DO I EXPORT AS AN OBJ IN CLASSIC
You will need to load the TGPGuiLib plug-in. It's been years since I used this, but it might only be compatible with a registered version of Classic http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~jomeder/tgpguilib/

I am sure all of you have been noticing the massive drop off with membership involvement with Challenges as well as the main gallery. The rendo staff has been reaching out to me to see what we can do as a community to keep our little corner in the www alive and healthy. There was some talk about combing the v.9 & v3 challenges into one, but is that going to get any more involvement? We have about 3-4 people who enter every challenge, almost none of the TG 3 users in the galleries have entered any of the previous v2-v3 challenges. I do appreciate active members dedication to the challenges and I certainly do not want to discontinue these but 3 contestants per challenge is hardly a challenge. The multiple entry thing was nice however it is a serious sacrifice of quality when a member entries 3 images in a months time. The idea behind these challenges to to push ones ability to be the best you can be. The # number of entries is up with this, but I am sure you agree the quality just isn't there. So I have asked this many times over the years, what do YOU as a member would like to see in the forums?
