Subject: 3dsMax Quick Tip: Useful Modeling Script Addon (Free)

Hi, everyone.  I thought I'd share with you this incredibly useful, and productive tool I recently incorporated into my workflow, which I believe has helped increase my modeling speed, and provided a very quick and easy way to create cuts and new edges in a mesh.  It's called UniConnector.  Uniconnector is a very powerful Maxscript tool, created by Nikolay Litvinov (aka Nik), and can be downloaded from Scriptspot.com for free.

Once you download the latest version of this great tool, you can move it to your scripts folder, and initialize it by going to Maxscripts > Run Script in your 3dsmax menu options.  Then, simply go to Customize > Customize User Interface > Keyboard to assign it to a hotkey (recommended), or anywhere in the UI you like.

The purpose of this tool in a modeling workflow is that you could make any kind of edge connection (create a new edge) at any sub-object selection level, with the use of only one universal hotkey or menu command.  So, for example, instead of having two different hotkeys assigned to perform a vertex connection when in vertex mode, or an edge connect in edge mode; with this tool, you need to only call upon one universal hotkey to do either task.   It will also do vertex connections through existing edges in the topology, in the same way the Distance Connect, or Cut tool would.  So in essence, this one tool replaces the need for 3 or 4 different hotkey commands in 3dsmax.  Here are some more examples of how it can be used to assist modeling workflow:

  • Select two opposing border edges, and it will do a polygon bridge operation between the borders.
  • Select two vertices in a mesh, and it will do an edge cut from one vertex to another.
  • Select two edges along a ring, and it will perform a edge connection by distance between them.
  • All this using the same hotkey command, via the script.

Click Here to go to the Scriptspot page, and download UniConnector.  Read the additional info, and some of the reviews.  Judge for yourself if this a tool you might find useful in your own modeling workflow.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Forgot to mention, with this tool, you can also: Cap Holes in a mesh, and create spline segments between two vertices on a Editable Spline shape, all from one hotkey.  Definitely worth checking out.

Ok, this is a great addon!!  I installed it for kicks and giggles, and assigned it to a hotkey.  This is really amazing.  I can make cuts in the mesh with this thing from one vert to another, right through crossing edges, with just one click.  As far as I know, this isn't even possible with the standard connect or the distance connect tool in Max out of the box.  I'd only been able to do it by using the Cut tool.  So already this is amazingly useful to me.  Now I'm wishing for something like this in BLENDER, so that I didn't have to remember so many hotkeys.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

System: Pentium QuadCore i7, under Win 8, GeForce GTX 780 / 2GB GPU.

Here's a quick video I made demonstrating how the UniConnector script can enhance the modeling workflow.  These are just a few examples of what you can do through just a single hotkey action.  Maxxx, you'll notice that the vertices connections here are done in a similar fashion to how the "J" hotkey behaves in Blender.  I especially like it because in addition to this, it can also close holes, and tessellate faces, from the same hotkey.
