Subject: Blacksmith 3D and DAZ's Genesis 3 Female

Jack238 ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 4:57 PM · edited Tue, 26 March 2024 at 6:10 AM

I have been testing Genesis 3 with Blacksmith. There are a number of new features. The bending at joints like the shoulder and elbow are much improved along with fingers and toes looking much better. Facial expressions are also much improved. I was worried that with all these changes Blacksmith would have some problems. I tested textures and they worked fine for me. I was most interested in morphs. They work well too.

I do get a message from Blacksmith3D when I import either the OBJ and CR2 files created in DAZ Studio latest version 4.8. It says that the coordinates are out of range and offers to fix them. I selected "yes" and all went well. You have to change the model to base resolution from the default high resolution for morphs to work. That is the same thing that is necessary with Genesis 2.

Hello Jack238,

That's really great news!  We just found out about the release today, too, so we haven't had a chance to go buy it and test with it yet. Your morphed face turned out very well. Thanks so much for letting us the Genesis 3 female works well in Blacksmith3D and for sharing an image of your Gen 3 morph.

The coordinates issue is due to Genesis 3 using UDIM over the previous UV method, so it's spread out over more than just 0,0 and 0,1.

Thanks Vaskania. I know there are lots of changes but I am sure you can imagine the sinking feeling I had when that warning came up. OH NO!!!! I have heard of UDIM but I am not sure what it is used for or what its advantages are.

Blacksmith3D, thanks and a quick note, Genesis 3 Female is free and included with the latest DAZ Studio. Now Victoria 7 is going to cost you smile.

It's advantages mostly come with 3D painting. With a lot of the figures, the UVs are overlapped in a horrible, jumbled mess all in 0,0, which could make painting a nightmare. With UDIM, they're spread out and not stacked. Mind you, this doesn't apply with painting the hard way in a 2D app like Photoshop, only apps like 3D Coat, Mari, Mudbox, etc.

Let's see if I can get these images in here. The horrible looking image is the previous UVs, and the horizontal image is a UDIM layout.

Sweet, the images worked. Here's also a nice little read on the 0,0-0,1 UVs vs UDIM. http://bneall.blogspot.com/p/udim-guide.html

So does Blacksmith 6 work with UDIM UV's? If not can we get an upgrade this layout seems more logical. I got 3D Coat to work on ptex. There are no ptex textures for Daz figure yet but studio is supposed to support them? Oh man, now I am going to have to look into using 3D Coat to texture Genesis 3 with new UV structure.

"So does Blacksmith 6 work with UDIM UV's?"

When importing the Genesis 3 .duf file, answering "yes" to let B3D fix the UV coordinates being out of range will make the UV's wrap back into the UV {0..1} range enabling them to be painted in Blacksmith3D, so all should be good there.

I should add...I'd hate for you to have to look into using 3D Coat...just no reason for that.  smile

Yes it does work. I also got out of range do you want to fix and when I imported at base resolution and imported as object. See screen shot for G3 in Blacksmith 6.
