Entry #2

Haunted Pollepel Island

Pollepel Island in the Hudson River was avoided by the local native tribes; they believed it was haunted. Eventually it was purchased by Francis Bannerman, as a place for his munitions warehouse.  An immigrant from Scotland, he made the warehouse look like a Scottish castle. He built it without any right angles - reminiscent of Hill House, in Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.

The warehouse was destroyed by an explosion, and later a fire of unknown origins destroyed the other buildings on the island.  The work of the island's goblins?

One story about the island: at night, you can supposedly hear the bell of a sunken boat, ringing from beneath the water.

Photo was taken with a camera adapted for infrared photography.  I chose infrared because it tends to make images that look sort of spooky.  Shutter speed was a fraction of a second, since I was standing on a floating dock and a fast shutter speed was necessarily to avoid motion blur.  A few minutes in Photoshop to convert the image to black and white and adjust contrast.
