Subject: Toon renders and hair textures...

This is something that has bothered/boggled me for years, certain hair props/figures either don't show the bitmap texture, or come off as transparent in the preview render making them completely useless for toon renders.

What causes this, and how can it be overcome?

It looks like the hair display is set to cartoon with line rather than texture shaded. you can fix in the preview styles window. Change it from document style to either figure style or element style. You can also find it unter the display menu.

I think it's the creator of the hair prop that does that. Transmapped hair can be nearly invisible, so some people set the hair to display in preview as cartoon with line or something of that ilk, so the user can see it to position it. I believe you can change the way it displays in preview by editing the PP2 file (it's just plain text). I don't know if there's an easier way.

It looks like your display style is not set to Texture Shaded. If the hair is a figure choose Figure Style from the drop down of the display styles and if it's a .pp2 or .hr2 choose Element Style and set it to Texture Shaded. That should also make the transparency show up.

Sorry guys, either I am misunderstanding you or what you're saying isn't working.

From what I understand you guys want me to change universal settings, but that not helping me.

I need to change a setting on the model itself, the hair model, not the entire scene, and I am not seeing how to do that.

Never mind, it was under object style(was a prop, not a figure), and I set it to texture shaded and solved my problem.

Thanks...

I have honestly been looking for a solution to this for years. Now I know, and I won't forget.

If anyone is having this problem, here's a screenshot showing the entire path to the setting:

It does nothing when you use the style buttons because you still have it at document display. I showed you in the screenshots above that you need to change it to figure style or element style depending on what your hair is (figure or prop)

Since I've been using Poser for so long I prefer these shortcuts instead of the menu and sometimes I forget others are not as familiar with the UI. Whatever works for you :)

Thanks for the tip. This will help with many older hair props and figures that do not display the texture map in the preview.

I cannot get this to work. I'm trying to hide the wireframe lines on a hair figure (Donna hair from DAZ) they just won't go away. It works with other figures, but not for this one. Is there a lock or something I have to turn off?

Try it on figure style if the hair is a figure and not prop.

Again this drove me nuts forever,  and the solution was so simple, and honestly in retrospect,  should have been obvious. Just  go through and set everything, document, object, and figure style to texture shaded.

It's a figure. I've tried both object and figure, but nothing changes.

Did you go through and make sure every body part of the hair was changed too? Sometimes it's done at the object level for each part.

That worked. Thanks! (But what a pain.)

Ug, I know. Why anyone would do that is beyond me.
