Subject: Modeling Tutorial: 3 Techniques for Quad-Capping A Cylinder

Attached Link: Quad-Capping A Cylinder (Several Polygon Techniques)

Hi, everyone.  Wanted to share a new tutorial video I uploaded, which demonstrates a few techniques which could be used to easily create a 100% quad cylinder, for use in subdivisional modeling.  Potentially, these methods could also come in handy for capping ***any*** circular mesh hole with quadrilateral faces.  While I am working in this video with 3dsmax, the procedures used here should be easily performed in any capable polygon modeling package.

This is the first video tutorial I've created with narration, so please excuse my offensive voice.   :blushing:  Hope you find this useful in some way.  Thanks.

You forgot one!  What about creating a plane, with the same number of sides as your cylinder, and then bridge it to the holes in your end caps?  Just line it up center with the  holes, and click bridge.  That's the technique I used to use in Cinema4D, before I discovered the quad capping plugins back in r14.

Your voice isn't unpleasant, mate. You sound like one of my old college professors.

Another very kool Tut.  Thanks for sharing

Hey on the cap you did where you flatened the sphere cap... couldn't you start out with a plane and Sub-D it, extrude out and then down?

@Sinnersaint:  Yes, that method is also an option, and works well.

@Cybermonk:  It certainly appears like that technique will work in Blender, but in my 2012 version of 3dsmax, the subdivision algorithms used do not circularize a flat, single-sided plane like that.  Are you using the Catmull-Clark OpenSubdiv in that example?  If so, then that's probably why.  This may be possible in the current 2015 version of 3dsmax with OpenSubdiv support, but in my version, you would need to use another tool to circularize the border edges of the plane. I expect that would also be the case in any package which didn't use the OpenSubdiv algorithm.

Yeah Catmull-Clark. Even at that  the looptools circle does improve the shape a bit.

This is real interesting.  I tried Cybermonk's awesome suggestion in Blender just now, and the result was great.  But compared to an actual cylinder from the Create panel, the shape made from subdividing a plane isn't totally round.  I have attached a screencap from Blender 2.71 below to this post.

Edit to say,  I see Cybermonk's reply to Luxxeon above, and just to confirm, if I use the Circle option in Blender's LoopTools on the edges of the subdivided plane, it fixes that problem, and the two shapes match up better.

Thanks, fellas!  Good tutorials guys!

@HMorton You can use the GridFill on the faces menu to cap a cylinder too. In fact its good for pluging up a  bunch of things.

Lux, great tutorial, but any mention of the words quad capping and 3dsmax together in the same sentence would be incomplete without the words Marius Silaghi.  His awesome Quad Cap Pro plugin should have been menitoned along with the quad cylinder script! I thought you were a big fan of his tools?  😉  Now that they finally gave us Pixar's Open Subdiv in the last service release, we need to push for this plugin to be put into v2016!  The free scripts are great and all, but this tool is good for much more than just quad capping circular holes.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

System: Pentium QuadCore i7, under Win 8, GeForce GTX 780 / 2GB GPU.

I was only interested, for purpose of this video, in demonstrating some common, easy, and universal polygon techniques for quad capping cylinders.  While the Quad Cap Pro plugin, and others like it, are awesome tools, their usefulness and capabilities are beyond the scope of what I intended for this tutorial.

I like the Grid Fill tool in Blender.  It's a nice time saver for Blender users.

I've uploaded a new video, demonstrating a 4th technique to creating a quad-capped cylinder, which I feel is probably the easiest of all the techniques so far.

This method was inspired by Cybermonk, and the discussion created here in this thread, and I mention that as well toward the end of this clip.  Hopefully some of these techniques will prove useful to you, and aid in your subdivisional modeling workflow in some small way.

Thanks.

What about worling the other way. Sofar, we have a cylindrical extrusion from an end cap. Would your workflow contain adding the end cap to an existing cylinder (or part of)

The first two techniques involved adding an end cap to an existing cylinder, if you watch the first video.
