Description

When one thinks of India, the image that rightly comes to mind is that of Taj Mahal. This is rightly so. However, there are thousands of monuments here that are exquisite in their architecture and significant in their heritage dating back many centuries before the Taj Mahal. To this category belongs the temples of Khajuraho otherwise known as 'Temples of Love'. In the next few slides I would like to introduce these temples and sculptures. The architectural splendour of the temples built by the Chandela kings (9th - 12th century) in central India, is world renowned. Of the 85 temples built over 200 years, only 20 survive in good condition. The temples are richly embellished with sculptures. This temple, built in the mid 10th century, is dedicated to Vishnu, the God of Preservation, one among the trinity in the Hindu pantheon. The others being Brahma, the creator and Shiva, the destroyer. It has a main shikara (apex structure) and four subsidiary shikaras in the four corners. The temple is covered with rich carvings. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did visiting these magnificent temples.
