Description

This one is taken from the Quarry, in which you can still see the broken boulders which the inca's used to build the place from. There is one such rock which has some petroglyphs on them (snakes to be precise - another incan/andean deity) - infact it is the flat one you can seeobstructing your view of the part of the beige path to the right, directly below (in the picture) the tree before the main courtyard of the complex. This was an interesting place because of all the rocks around, and also the fact that the lodges used by the stonemasons were still part of the construction - Machu Picchu was not completed btw. Also that horseshoe construction you see with the "prongs" facing us... well they fouled up on that one... the right hand corner of the building sunk into the foundations which hadn't been laid properly (i'll reiterate what i said in my last upload: 60% of the construction work of Machu Picchu is below ground level!!). Construction was abandoned at the time of the incas - this is shown by the fact that the masonry of some of the stones on the other side of that wall was unfinished (it also provided archaeologists with a clue as to how the incas did it - the stones were fitted into place so they locked regardless of the external look of the wall itself... they then hammered the stone to match the rest of the wall - quite different from european styles of masonry). Well - that was all pulled from memory, so i have to say i am glad i went, i evidently learnt a lot when i was out there. Enjoy! Rich

Excellent memory :D Thank you for the history lesson...Had no idea they never finished it...you hear so much about how fabulous ancient builders were yet they go and mess ups something so important...Puts them on a more human level :)
