Description

In her comment on yesterday's upload, Tara reminded me of Athabasca Glacier. I've already posted two shots of that, but never one of this glacier from the same area in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. We were there on a cold and rainy day in August of 2004, but it was worth the hike. Here's a blurb from a page I found when looking for stats. "From the road, Parker Ridge is rather uninspiring - nothing more than a barren alpine slope. The short climb to the top is equally uninspiring, with plenty of traffic noise and people to keep you company. But this is one hike where the destination is everything. Crest the ridge and you enter a different world - a world of spectacular mountain and valley scenery dominated by the Saskatchewan Glacier, the largest of the Columbia Icefield's six main glaciers." I would have loved to have been able to get closer to the glacier, but it was just too far to go, especially in bad weather, and the slope down to the valley was scary steep. Thanks for looking and any comments.

The water at the base of the glacier is sure a beautiful color of blue. I really like this shot with the trees, the glacier, and the water.

Stunning view! If only we'd had shots like this for my A level geography, they were all b/w.

I had to double-check, I thought it must have been a creation out of Terragen. I've always seen glaciers photographed from a closer, narrower perspective...never getting the BIG PICTURE. It's illuminating. Truly a river of ice. Thanks for sharing.

A stunning shot Dennis. I wonder how it looked during the 'Gold Rush' days. Probably all the way down to the bottom of your frame. Sig..

What a great shot but for me it's missing something, something more dramatic maybe!! If I could work out how to attach stuff to these messages I'd show you what I mean !!

The clouds coming off the glacier are most incredible! The cerulean lake and stream astonish the eye.

I think any closer and you might have lost the awesomeness of the size and power in this slow moving ice. Excellent!

I'm sure you'd have liked to get closer, but this is an excellent picture, perfectly composed. You keep getting better, and there will be other days. Go back. :~)
