Description
The smoke was visible long before the ruins of the enclave came into view. And at last Asanka could no longer deny the evidence before him and he knew with an inner certainty that his mother was really dead and his home destroyed.
Only Suak remained to greet him, the alegoyle flying down with a cry of recognition as Asanka reached the end of the mirror bridge. The horsemen were gone. The ground was churned and littered with dung as evidence of their passing but the burning station was quiet, save for the distant crackle and roar of the flames.
For a moment, Asanka contemplated the crossing and then he remembered Crinomu's words. The station was the past now and he must look to the future. Without even venturing onto the bridge he turned Lyr and drew the klane. He felt a moment of epiphany as his horse reared up into the night air.
"They have destroyed my home and my family then let them also take my name. Asanka was the name of my friends but it is my name no more. I have no friends left alive who would call me by it. So I vow at this moment to take a new name; a name for my enemies to know instead. From henceforth they shall call me 'The Klane of Kalonia'. And I vow that they shall learn to fear that name for I shall hunt them down even unto the ends of the earth and beyond!"
Time and distance are not kind to little words like "the" and "of". So it is as "Klane Kalonia" that we now know the man who was once called Asanka. This then, is the end of the beginning and the true start of the many Legends of Klane Kalonia, of his endless struggles to right wrongs, to battle evil, to defend the weak and rebuke the strong. And of his final mythic destiny to change the world forever.
But of these matters we will say no more at present, for they properly belong to other tales and the telling of those tales must wait for another day...

Well that's all from this series for now. Thanks to those who've followed it so far and if there is anyone who has viewed them all from the beginning I'm impressed! Who is Klane Kalonia? Although he's a relatively recent arrival in my gallery, Klane is actually the oldest personal imaginative creation I've posted. Strictly he's not my creation. Klane Kalonia was the invention of a school friend of mine from many years ago, who conjoured him up and pictured him as the hero of a movie. Glyn was a much better artist with pen and ink than I'll ever be (I only do digital art!) and many illustrations of Klane's adventures adorned his sketchbook with some storyboards too. I've since lost touch with my old friend and as far as I know Klane's been in retirement for almost 30 years. I dragged him back out of the dusty attic of memory three years ago when I was looking for some inspiration in a novel I'm trying to write. This story, called "A Gift From The Sea", is a fantasy piece which I've been constructing for far too long and far too slowly. It's not centrally concerned with Klane Kalonia at all, but when I conceived of the Great Forgetting as an interesting element of the history of this world, Klane came out from somewhere right at the back of my mind and I’ve given him a minor spot in the novel as a legend from the Great Forgetting referred to almost in passing. I can't remember many details from Glyn's original concept of Klane's story, only the fact that he was a solitary wanderer and warrior over a depopulated grassy Earth occupied by strange monsters. These elements of his character and environment I have preserved in my own imaginings so I hope Klane finds himself at home in my universe! All his new adventures, including the origin myth I’ve just illustrated are purely my own recent invention. I don't plan on using Klane a great deal in "A Gift From The Sea" but I am finding him an inspiration in my art work here which I kind of hope may also unlock my writers block for the foreground novel. The Legends of Klane Kalonia are a story within a story and they won’t necessarily have cast iron mundane consistency because legends don’t. The luxury of a dream logic is enough for them, so I'll be free to post as little or as much as I have the inclination to invent in future and temporal order and continuity is not guaranteed! However, I do have a broad story arc for the Legends as a whole with a few episodes in mind and a fairly solid idea how they will end, if I ever get as far as illustrating that. I hope Glyn will forgive me for the appropriation of his character and that if he ever reads this he'll find Klane's new incarnation true to the spirit of the original.

I'm going to have a little break from Klane Kalonia for a while, at least until 2010 anyway. Just as a hint of where the story might continue though, here some titles for likely sequels in chronological order if anyone is interested:- Klane Kalonia and the Creature in the Crater Klane Kalonia and the Great Burning Klane Kalonia and the Spy from the Moon Klane Kalonia and Eshmelle Klane Kalonia and the Judgement of Trassamul Klane Kalonia and the New Sophisticates Klane Kalonia and the Awakening of History Of these, the last one already has a fully worked out text which just needs seven images to accompany it. The others are more like pegs for some fairly free floating ideas at the moment. When I feel ready to come back to Klane Kalonia again I'll pick up one or other of these.
