Description

On the edge of a streamside iceshelf, long elegant crystals of ice form. As the ice shelf slowly melts, water drips down and freezes in long columns. When the column gets close to the surface of the rushing stream, the water vapour feeds the column from below and delicate diamond shaped ice crystals are created. These are technically ephemeral stalactites, like the limestone drips formed in caves. These guys were about 6-8 inches long and are small versions of the tubular fairy bells I showed you on Siffleur Falls. I have never seen anything quite like this in all my years of working in snow bound landscapes. Believe it or not this is not a grayscale shot, it is full color. Still at Cline River Canyon near Nordegg, Alberta.

Now, this is incredible, Roxy! I love the detail and depth here - not to mention all the delightful ice diamonds. What a shot! I think there's an ice faerie peeking out at you from inside.... Or maybe it just my meds..... :-D

I see a couple of Ice Fae as well - Queen Zlata just took a look and stated that they can have that cold - she'll stay warm in Fae Valley but she does love the photo! I love this shot and the explanation as well

Ahh. Saw them out of order, so the comment on the later image makes sense now. Again, nature's beauty. Excellent close up. Your pics are nicely clear.
