Description

Uh-huh......Sure..... A bit more experimenting with DAZ.. The question was asked on my last upload if I would be abandoning Poser now that I have DAZ set up on the new machine... Nope. Not in this lifetime. And here's why.... Take a look at the image I've put in the first comment block.... That's right. 13 hours to get to 37% - even with an RTX-2080ti GPU. Using a Gen3 character I created in FaceGen way back when I was playing with DAZ on the laptop. There are 4 lights (3 spots and 1 distant, and the emissives in the chandelier). The amazing thing is that this is the resulting image even at 37%! Check it out at full-size.. Other than dropping a photo outside the windows, and adding my watermark, the render is untouched, just as it came out of DS. I tend to render my images huge - this one is UHD - 3840 X 2160 pixels. The original frames for my T.N.A. story are rendered at 3360 X 2100 pixels in Poser Pro 2014. With all the stuff I cram into those scenes - at 5 frames per page - It would take the rest of my life to finish Chapter 6 if I tried to do it in DAZ. So, no - I won't be leaving Poser behind any time soon... It's still my main go-to, especially for T.N.A. DAZ is an addition; just another tool in the box, just like Photoshop (which also has 3D capabilities), and Vue. 😉 As always, thanks for taking a look, and for all your wonderful comments and support! I suggest you probably have the render engine set for Iray. If you are not specifically using Iray materials, there is no benefit - change to 3Delight, the render time is MUCH MUCH MUCH shorter.

this is such an outrageously beautiful image; no grain, lighting is perfect and well composed. the higher you boost the quality level and boost the time allowed gives you outstanding work. In your case, you should use DS as your portrait machine while you use Poser as your normal rendering for T.N.A.

It was great talking to you and Jo tonight. Have a great day/night/whatevah!

Primo room decor my friend, very photogenic looking render Rod. Since that great 64 gift been rendering most at 5000 dpi. Shoot with them issues I'll stick with poser for now.

Your model is dynamite.

Someone suggested a Chinatown T.N.A. from my last post.

Glad you're not dumping Poser ATM :) This is a really nice render though. The light is really nice. But, to only get 37% done in 13+ hours is nuts. I would imagine you have to use IRAY with the emissives, which always takes more time.

Good points, even though I've never looked back since discovering DAZ Studio. While iRay rendering can be lengthy, the improved lighting quality is worth it, and I've used a number of tricks to cut down the render time. Also, unless I'm selling pics - which can't be done with fan art of copyrighted characters - I render at no more than 1440p.

Not sure what is going on with your Daz render but I always render at min 4000 x 4000 (and reduce image size post render if needed) and my renders are usually well cooked within one hour with a GTX 1080, usually less.......unless my image is so busy that it exceeds the GPU memory and reverts to using CPU........this extends rendering time many fold.

That is some extraordinary equipment you bring to the rendering table, my friend! All my images are only a measly 2500 by 1730is pixels and they usually only take less than an hour and a lot less than that for most to render. Short attention span here. LOL! So, this little lady in red... is she related to the vamp in 'Who framed Roger Rabbit?' I'm not really bad. I'm just drawn that way! A classic! Wonderful image, Rod! She really looks sweet!

Wow - she is beautiful!!! Great setting and super character pose!!! That render time doesn't sound right, you should check your setup. I don't render at those high resolutions and if that is how long it will take I never will - my limit for renders is 1 or 2 hours, then I need my computer for something else lol

I'm sure you know that BAD can also mean really, really GOOD, too ! ! ! ! Excellent work . . . . and, I feel your (DAZ Studio) pain. Thanks for the "render to file" tip. I will give it a try on my next render.

Other than this opulent piece above performed in Daz/Studio, all those program doodads, intricacies and numbers mentioned fall on deaf ears from where I'm sitting. It's beyond Greek to me.

I enjoy your beautiful art, Rod... you're such a great artist with an amazing talent, no matter what tools you use to create. I wish I had the time and patience to render in DS... a couple hours in the weekend with Poser is all I can spare so I really need faster render times (minutes not hours) and possibly without so much grain that could solve world hunger, plus I have to squeeze in the postwork in that time also. I'm glad to see you have your new rig set up and running.

Happy New Years and best wishes to you! I'm so happy to have such an awesome friend like you, good sir!

Hi Rod If you do big scenes, the resolution of many of the different textures is way too high. You could easily cut them down to a fraction of it and notice no difference in quality (but a big one in render time). There is a nifty tool on Daz which does the job for you (scaling down, skipping normal maps, bumpmaps, displacement maps if you find, that the effect is not really visible anyway, etc…). Just do a search for scene optimizer at daz and you'll find it. Reduced texture sizes can dramatically cut down render times. As WolaverJS already mentioned, converting your material in to Iray-Materials could help as well to get better results (the Iray uber base shader comes with DS and does the job). How ever 3Delight is no alternative to IRAY - definitely not. It s simply not te same quality (and still way to slow). It might be ok for cartoon like renders, but if you are into photo realistic, then there is no way around physical based render engines such as IRAY, Octane, Superfly, Lux, Vray and what they all are called.

Happy new year

Hey, did you ever wondered why I'm always showing my cuties around a poolside or on a beach ? ;) Like you noticed, Iray takes a LOT of time to process indoor scenes, but it can render outdoor scenes really, really fast, on the other hand. Feels like another world. Most of my pictures (rendered at 3000px wide) take between 1hour and 1h30, never more (with a simple 970 gpu, which has only 4Gb vram and all). I like summertime stuff, but this detail has it's importance too ;) . That said, 13 hours doesn't look normal to me, especially with a monster GPU like the one you've got (congrats for that btw :D ). You should check the threads on Daz forums about indoor lighting, a scene like that shouldn't take more than 1-2 hour, perhaps less with the 2080 Ti (oh wait, there is perhaps something with the Daz version you're using too, I think I've heard 20xx gpus are only supported with the new beta, so if you're using 4.10 or any "release" version, the gpu wasn't used at all. You should check this too).

That said, great looking scene and character :) , she looks like no other ! And happy new year to you my friend :)

Indeed - it's not using the GPU at all... If I uncheck CPU in the render settings it will not render at all... Guess I'll have to DL the beta and see if that works.

It was the emissive light and the large resolution that caused the long render time. My renders take around an hour using iray. You can turn off rendering quality and set the maximum time in render settings under progressive
