“Never underestimate a mage’s curiosity.”- Unknown.
Allis had bought the three egg like things from an old farmer’s wife at a rummage sale in Shirewick. The price was marked at .70p but Allis insisted on paying 25pounds. They were dingy and dull and looked more like large pinecones.
Later, in her laboratory they lay clean and shiny blue, red, and a mustard color. Several of her upper-level students asked what they were and received only a smile from the Wizardess. The news of her finds radiated outwards and many of the faculty and staff wondered what she might have found. While the rumors swirled it was assumed that they were props from an ancient television show, there were a few that were not so certain.
Only one seemed to be quite sure they were just painted plaster baubles. That was Elan, who happened to be a blue dragon that came into Allis’s acquaintance and often visited. He did so mostly because Alis never seemed to tire of his monologues of how things used to be, and her ability to bake wonderful pies and cakes. In turn she would ask seemingly unimportant random questions about dragons to which she took copious notes.
Today he had arrived at her request. But today, instead of smelling cake he scented something far different coming from her lab. Something that drew him as a moth to flame. Something that caused him to only diminish his size and not appear as a humanoid.
Inside he saw Allis kneeling on the floor seeming to be conjuring. Before her was a small pile of gold and gems, and the three objects two of which were levitating just above the small pile. The third seemed almost to be levitating as if it where too heavy. “What are you doing girl!” Elan said startled with a heavy lisp as human language is difficult in its natural form. “Hey Elan.” She said as if she were doing little of importance. Elan drew closer as the scent was coming from the pile of gold. “What do you think you are doing young lady.” He said with a bit of force. “Those are just plaster trinkets.” He added.
Allis smiled softly, “No great one, they are dragon eggs.” Elan was shocked and curled behind her, “That cannot be, dragons don’t lay eggs, females birth live offspring.” He stated as a matter of fact. Allis gave a glance at the eggs and noted the red one was very nearly off the pile as the others. “I suppose you can explain that to them should they hatch, but they may be obliged to disagree with you.” She began. “A wizard from the first age, philigrendon wrote that certain types of dragons were created by the use of magic. That eggs were crafted of a special type of plaster and then transformed into hatchlings using a chemical mixture poured on true gold and gems.” She said as if lecturing. Elan looked deeply at the eggs and the gold. “That is just a fairy story little mage, it’s not real.” Elan said unassertively.
“Says the ancient blue dragon.” Allis said smiling.
