Description

Pastel Pencils on sanded paper. After a one of my own photos I took on our Rhine Tour in August. With a little of my own improvisations, such as a path and a bit of the sky, which wasnt on the photo. I used a style I saw on youtube. I loved the style, but it demands alot of patience. I could have use a few more colors, I needed for this to be better. AH well. Atleast I had great fun. Thank you so much for your kind comments to my previous posts.

Such wonderful detail you get ... and with pastels!! I'm thoroughly impressed. That's not new ... I'm always impressed with your work. If I had tried this, you would say, "That's very nice, Tara! What kind of flower was it meant to be?" LOL! I'll stick with digital ... you can erase all you want. :P

Helle, this truly is a marvelous work of art and you make us feel as if we are at the tower with you.

You mentioned adding a path and a bit of sky. It would be great if a whole bunch of people, from the Rhine, drove to your house and took out the path and sky (and said, "watch it!"). You do what you have to to make your art work! This looks like a touch subject, because it has only a few color families, and you have to make light/dark, texture, contrast, balance, etc, within those ranges. The trees in the background have a great deal of shadow and texture. You've got the tower top pointing right in the center of the center tree (a good compositional choice). The trees kind of billow out like a big head of hair. The tower looks like a parent and his/her children meandering behind. (That's how the little jutting walls look, to me.) And the path adds some earth tone to an otherwise heavily green painting/drawing. And I like that you framed it too, by creating or leaving a border around the drawing: It feels very intimate and warm that way. This is delightful, and considering you used pastels, it's all the more amazing. I have some pastel pencils, it turns out, and I sketched with them. If I really used them like pastels, they were difficult for me---but that's because I haven't used pastels in a while. (And I have 3 complete boxes of professional pastel chalks too. Just SITTING there!!!) (If I use the pastel pencils like pencils, they're a lot easier for me.) But you've taken hold of a very difficult medium, and done beautiful and natural work with it. A gentle and charmed image. Fine detail too.

I remembered it and i don't know why i didn't commented lol! It is wonderfully done Helle. So many details and is so difficut with pastels!!!Now i know how difficult it is to do what you did...:) you got different textures and you played wonderfully with light. There much luminosity also. You used many tones in the trees, so you achieved fabulous shadows and contrasts. And the Tower 'jumps' to us in a 3D view. Beautiful! I love the depth of this painting ! A truly wonder, dear Helle:) once more:)
